Popeye: A Day at Muscle Beach (1978)

Today, we present a lighthearted look at the iron game, featuring the cartoon exemplar of strength, Popeye the Sailor. This is from the “Popeye and Friends Official” channel on Youtube.

Although this animated short was made at the height of the “Pumping Iron” era of the late 1970s, the depiction of strength and fitness is more reminiscent of the physical culture of the early twentieth century from whence Popeye originally came: plenty of globe dumbbells and barbells in use, feats of strength being given greater emphasis than aesthetic physique development, and, of course, bathing suits from the 1920s.
